Admissions

There are two different types of admissions – those to start school at the ‘normal’ time for the start of the Reception year, and those for places in other year groups or at any other time – these are called ‘in-year’ applications for school places.  In-year applications are made for example when a child is already attending one school and the parent/carers wish to move their child from one school to another, and when a family moves to a different area and needs a new school place for their child(ren).

Whilst the admission authority for our school is the governing body, admissions applications are co-ordinated by the Local Authority, East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

If you would like to visit the school when considering making an application, please call 01405 861916 to arrange a visit.

How do I apply for a ‘normal’ school place for my child?

Applications to start our school for the first time, for the start of Reception should be made direct to the Local Authority in which you live by the deadline for applications.  Late applications will be considered after those submitted by the deadline, often when there are no places available so it is important that you apply on-time.  If you live in East Riding of Yorkshire Council area, then you can find more information about ‘normal’ admissions processes, deadlines, details of the appeal process and other information at www.eastriding.gov.uk/apply-for-a-school-place.  If you live outside the East Riding, you should apply to your ‘home’ Local Authority and not East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

When applying for a place you should also complete the supplementary information form that you may wish to complete to provide additional information for the admission authority.  This should be returned to the school direct by the deadline for applications and not the Local Authority.

How do I apply for an ‘in-year’ school place for my child?

Although we are an voluntary aided school, and the admissions authority for the school is the governing body we have formally requested that applications for school places are made through the local authority’s co-ordinated admissions scheme for in-year applications.  Applications to start our school in-year should be made direct to the Local Authority no earlier than one term before the place is required, and it is recommended that you apply no later than a period of twenty school days, that is four weeks in term time, before you wish for the place to be available for your child.  Applications are considered in the order that they have been received, for example if there is one space available in a year group, the parent/carer who applied for their place first will likely be allocated the place for their child.  Proof of residence may be required before places can be allocated, and the school fully adheres to the East Riding Fair Access Protocol.  Applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application as soon as is possible, though this is commonly ten school days after an application has been received, but may be later in certain circumstances.

If you live in East Riding of Yorkshire Council area, then you can find more information about ‘in-year’ admissions processes, and details of the co-ordinated admissions scheme at www.eastriding.gov.uk/school-admissions where you can also find and download an application form along with details of how to appeal for a school place where you have been refused.  If you live outside the East Riding, you should apply to your ‘home’ Local Authority and not East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

When applying you should also complete the supplementary information form that you may wish to complete to provide additional information for the admission authority.  This should be returned to the school direct and not the Local Authority.

Who makes decisions on school admissions applications?

As we are an voluntary aided school, the admissions authority for the school is the governing body.  It is the admission authority, and not the Local Authority who determines whether there is an available place based upon the capacity of the class/year group and the number of pupils already on roll.

Who should I contact with queries on school admissions?

You can contact the East Riding School Admissions Team by email at schooladmissions@eastriding.gov.uk, by writing to School Admissions Team, East Riding of Yorkshire Council, County Hall, Beverley, HU17 9BA.  You can also call 01482 392100 in school hours.

The timetable for the ERYC Admissions Scheme is summarised below:

By 01 September 2026 – Information about applying for school places will be made available online and on request from the School Admissions team – including the Guide for Parents. Applications can start to be accepted.

15 January 2027 – Closing date for the submission of Common Application Forms both online and by paper form. Forms received after this date may be treated as late applications (see below).

9 February 2027 – Other local authorities will be notified of any Common Application Forms received on which applicants have expressed a preference for a school in their area. Other local authorities will also be asked to provide details of applications they have received from applicants resident in their area who have expressed preferences for places at East Riding of Yorkshire schools. The admission authorities of East Riding academies and foundation and voluntary aided schools will be sent details of the preferences received for their schools.

23 February 2027 – The admission authorities of East Riding academies and foundation and voluntary aided schools confirm the prioritisation of applicants using the school’s determined admission arrangements and notify the School Admissions team. This is also the last date by which academies and foundation and voluntary aided schools can notify the Council of an increase in the number of places to be allocated on National Offer Day. This is to allow the Council good time to deliver its coordination responsibilities effectively. The number of places cannot be decreased below the PAN.

24 February 2027 to 22 March 2027  – The allocation of school places is determined by the Council using the arrangements set out in the co-ordinated scheme (paragraph 5.3). Other local authorities are informed of the allocation of places at East Riding of Yorkshire schools to children resident in their areas. Other local authorities will also be asked to provide details of the allocation of places at schools in their areas to East Riding of Yorkshire resident children. The exchange of information with other local authorities will be carried out as and when information is available to exchange, which may be multiple times within this period.

5 April 2027 - The allocation of school places will be adjusted to take account of information provided by other local authorities on the eligibility of East Riding of Yorkshire resident children for places at schools in their areas. The School Admissions team sends information to all East Riding of Yorkshire schools notifying them of the applicants who are to be allocated places for their children.

from 16 April 2027 – Applicants are notified of the school place they have been allocated for their child.

30 April 2027 – Applicants should notify the School Admissions team if they do not want their child to take up the school place they have been allocated.

21 May 2027 – Deadline for applicants to lodge appeals against admissions decisions in the normal admissions round.

June and July 2027 – Appeals heard by independent school admission appeal panels.

Appeals:

Applicants refused a place at a school for their child normally have the right to appeal against the decision to refuse admission. To make an appeal you will need to complete an appeal form which can be obtained from the School Admissions Team.

Appeals must only be submitted by someone who has full parental responsibility for the child concerned. You should complete the appeal form, setting out clearly why you want your child to go to the particular school you want. For your appeal to be successful you will have to show why your child should have to go to that particular school and not to any other school.

Applicants refused a place at a school for their child will be given the right to appeal. Appeals will be heard by independent admission appeal panels.

Further information about admission appeals can be obtained from the School Admissions Team.

To contact the School Admissions team:

Tel: (01482) 392100 or
Email: schooladmissions@eastriding.gov.uk

Appeals for 'in-year' school admission requests are normally held within 30 school days of the date your appeal is received. You will be notified of the date of your appeal no later than ten school days before the appeal is due to take place.

Appeals for entry into Reception or Year 7 to start primary or secondary school for the first time - what are called 'normal' admission requests - are usually held in the summer term after parent/carers have been notified of the refusal of a school place, commonly in June and July.

You can appeal for places at any number of schools but will normally only be allowed to appeal once for a place at a given school in the same school year.

A further appeal for a place at the same school will only be allowed if there has been a significant change in circumstances which substantially affects the reasons why you want a place at the school or if new information comes to light which was not available when the original appeal was heard.
