April Newsletter
30th April 2025
Welcome back! We hope you have all had a great Easter. April has been another busy month. It has been wonderful to welcome so many parents, carers and family members into our school and church. Well done to Birch Class for a fabulous Easter retelling during their class worship before Spring Break, and also to Willow Class who show-cased their work about LS Lowry during their class worship today.
Last week, I took our mini police with PCSO Chandler to Pearson Park Mosque in Hull. This was a fabulous experience for our children. The Imam was so impressed with the children as they made comparisons between the Christian, Jewish and Muslim faiths, whilst showing great respect to all.
What a lovely start we have had to the summer term. Yesterday was a fabulous day as we enjoyed a whole school visit to Sheffield Cathedral. The children were an absolute credit to you and our school - we are sure they will have all slept well last night! The children got to learn about features of the building; history of the cathedral, create stained glass windows, crowns and pottery. Some children visited the bell tower. It was a really enjoyable day for everyone. Our thanks go to Charlotte and all the volunteers at the cathedral for such a memorable experience. We are looking forward to what we are sure will be another fabulous term.
Kind regards,
Mrs Rawes & Mrs Batty

Mini Police visit to Pearson Park Mosque
What a privilege. The children were invited by PC Osler to Pearson Park Mosque after their work with him around community cohesion. The children learned all about the Muslim faith, the features of a mosque, the 5 Pillars of Islam, what it is like to fast and more! I think they were most surpised when the Imam informed them that he liked nothing better than to play football in the park with his four year old! They also were wowed by the fact that the Imam managed to learn the Qu'ran (Holy Book) off by heart.

Swimming
A huge congratulations to all the children who competed in the swimming gala on 1st April at Askern Leisure Centre. They swam their hearts out, came away victorious, and have officially qualified for the next round in Beverley - we’re just waiting on confirmation of the date.
We are so incredibly proud of each and every one of you. You showed outstanding determination, teamwork, and sportsmanship throughout. It was wonderful to hear such positive feedback from other schools about how amazing you all were.
Parent Visits
Thank you to all the parents who were able to join Oak Class for a fantastic Easter Craft session. The children enjoyed making Easter chicks, painting Spring flowers and Easter baskets. We are really impressed with how the children have improved their fine motor skills. They were extremely proud and loved taking their crafts home.
Thank you to all parents who have visited our lessons over the past month, it has been lovely to welcome everyone into school.
Oak Class
What a busy month April has been. We managed to cram so much into the last two weeks of Spring Term.
In RE the children in Oak class explored the question, why do Christians put a cross in an Easter garden?
They created Easter gardens with beautiful spring plants, made crosses by collecting and fastening sticks together with string and used a plant pot and moss to create the tomb. The children found a large stone to roll away. This practical experience helped the children to deepen their understanding of the signs and symbols associated with Christianity.
We explored materials and changes by melting chocolate and making Easter nest buns.
We continued our Geography work by exploring a contrasting locality through the story, Handa’s surprise. The children have enjoyed using the finger puppets to retell the story and have continued to explore the animals in the story in our Savanna role play area.

Ash Class
Easter classroom Pilgrimage.
Ash Class recreated the Last Supper of Maundy Thursday. The children wanted to experience the Last Supper for themselves. The water for washing the disciples’ feet was scented with botanical oil and the food laid out for a Passover meal. We tasted the ‘wine’, ate the unleavened bread, enjoyed some grapes and many of us ate dates for the first time!
Mrs Blades and Mrs Pears
Willow Class
Willow class have been doing their favourite 'spy poses' during our first dance PE lesson for our new unit this half term.
We have also enjoyed studying the art of LS Lowry and reflecting on the gifts and talents that God has given us. We had to develop different tones by adding blue and yellow to primary colours. We really enjoyed sharing these in our parent worship.
This week we started learning to play the ukele.
Miss Habbishaw
Maple Class
The class has had a fabulous start to the term, diving enthusiastically into their textiles work in Art. They've especially enjoyed learning new weaving skills, and created some very comical caterpillars.
Alongside their artistic achievements, there’s a real buzz of excitement about the upcoming History topic—The Vikings! Many children have already taken the initiative to do their own research over the holidays, bringing in facts, drawings, and even detailed presentations to share. It’s shaping up to be a fantastic term full of curiosity, creativity, and collaboration.

Birch Class
Birch Class had a fantastic end to the Spring term.
Our swim team had enjoyed success at the competition, especially in their conduct and team spirit, we had presented our Class Worship - a poem about Easter acted out in groups and we had completed our pilgrimage around school looking at various parts of the Easter story.
We also enjoyed learning how we had done in assessment week.
Since returning to school, year six have realised, they only have 12 short weeks of primary school left, whilst year five have realised that this time next year, it will be them!
We have continued to delve into fractions, decimals and percentages in mathematics - learning how to divide fractions - well done Birch Class, you've really persevered here!
In English, our letters of persuasion demonstrate just how tricky a time parents must have at home - Birch Class can be very persuasive!
Though back less than a week, we've even squeezed a game of rounders - developing our fielding skills in preparation for the Cluster school competition.

Governors
Canon Eleanor
'I have been a Governor at Polllington since 2013 and have seen many changes, especially around the federation of Pollington and Cowick Schools. The role is varied and I love the opportunity to interact with the pupils and staff. I am often in school, both in my role as Vicar, leading services or taking part in lessons but also I oversee RE and PSHE as a Governor. It is really important to me that the children are at the centre of everything we do and I hope we do our best as Governors to ensure that the children have the best experience of school. There have been so many amazing moments in this role, but my favourite ever on a visit to the school was a reception child walking up to me and asking me 'are you the hoover lady?!' It was just the best random question ever!!!'
PTA
A huge thank you to everyone who attended the Bingo event at The Kings Head, and thanks to the team there for having us. We raised £312 for our little school which is amazing!

As the weather gets warmer can parents also be mindful of the sunny conditions and apply sun screen before school as required and to bring a sun hat (named please). Children also need to remember to bring in their water bottle so everyone are all keeping hydrated in the classrooms.

Community News
The ERYC are seeing an increase in chicken pox in education settings across the area. Chickenpox does tend to be more common between March and May.
Spotting the signs of an infectious disease early is important and parents should be aware of the symptoms, particularly in young children where it can spread quickly through a community.
Chickenpox is common and mostly affects children, but you can get it at any age. It usually gets better by itself after one to two weeks without needing to see a GP.
The main symptom is an itchy, spotty rash, which can be anywhere on the body.
Other symptoms also include a high temperature, aches and pains, generally feeling unwell, and a loss of appetite.
Chickenpox happens in three stages:
Stage 1: small spots appear.
Stage 2: the spots become blisters.
Stage 3: the blisters become scabs.
Individuals with Chickenpox should:
- Stay away from school, nursery or work until the spots have formed a scab
- Not go near newborn babies, people who are pregnant and people with a weakened immune system, as chickenpox can be dangerous for them
- Not scratch the spots, as scratching can cause scarring.
Please contact the school office if you suspect your child has chickenpox.
