Spring 1 Newsletter

What a busy half term it has been! We have thoroughly enjoyed visiting classrooms and witnessing the wonderful work our children have been doing. It has also been a delight to receive book recommendations from them - and I am looking forward to trying out some new reads. During Children’s Mental Health Week, we focused on ‘This is My Place’, exploring themes of belonging and identity. It’s lovely to see how our school family embraces each unique individual. For links to resources to support children with their wellbeing – please see below:

It was lovely to take part in the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. Each class chose a different local church to pray for and Ash Class receieved a thank you message from John Weetman, Vicar of Selby, thanking them for their prayers.

We have welcomed a number of visitors into school in recent weeks: Bishop Leah, Rev'd Huw Thomas, Rev'd Peter Warren, governors; and the ERYC Safeguarding Team, to name a few. Everyone has been so complimentary about our children and school; they should all feel very proud.

I am incredibly proud of our choir, who bravely performed for the whole school. We hope to organise a concert for parents soon. Additionally, mark your calendars for the 6th of March, when we invite families to join us for a maths learning session. More details will follow.

Finally, a huge thank you to our wonderful PTA  for putting on another successful school disco. The event has raised £120 which will go towards buying lovely new books for our classrooms. Thank you also to our fabulous team for giving up their time to support this.  Thank you also to Mrs Atha for a donation of books for Oak class.

Wishing everyone a restful half term, and we look forward to welcoming you back on Monday, 23rd February.

Kind regards

Mrs Rawes and Mrs Batty

Bishop Leah Pays a Visit

We were delighted to welcome Bishop Leah to both our schools at Cowick and Pollington-Balne. She took part in our worship and led a blessing; answered questions from our worship council including who had inspired her and what do you have to do to be a Bishop. Then she took the time to bless our newly refurbished room with the well. It was a real privilege to meet with her. We also welcomed Huw Thomas, our Diocesan Director for Education and his puppet friend, Bernard! As you can imagine, Bernard caused a usual riot, but he and Huw left us with a lovely gift of a book about inspirational people and those who show courage; very fitting as our Christian Value this half term was courage.

Welcome back, Mrs Bodle!

We are absolutely delighted to welcome Mrs Bodle back to our wonderful Pollington family!

Over the Christmas break, Mrs Bodle had a change of heart — she realised that she simply couldn’t say goodbye to the amazing community we share. And honestly, we can’t imagine Pollington without her! Her warmth, dedication and unwavering commitment to our children make such a difference every single day.

They say home is where the heart is, and we are so pleased that Mrs Bodle’s heart remains right here with us. Welcome back, Mrs Bodle.

Congratulations, Miss Habbishaw!

We are very proud of Miss Habbishaw who just found out this week that she came twelfth out of over seventy entrants in her category for an international writing competition which had over two-thousand entrants overall. Her mission was write a 250-word short story in the 'action' genre and her entry got an 'honorable mention'.

Quotes from the judges: "This piece is well-paced and engaging…   I really loved this! ... I thought the descriptions were really atmospheric, they painted a really vivid and somewhat fairytale-like picture."

We look forward to reading Miss Habbishaw's writing in the future!

Fond farewell - Mrs Taylor and Mrs Horrocks

As we approach the end of a busy half term, I want to take a moment to celebrate two fabulous members of our school community. After many years of dedicated service, Mrs Taylor is hanging up her 'marigolds' to enjoy a well-deserved retirement and embrace her role as a Grandma. We wish her all the happiness in this new chapter—don’t be a stranger!

We also extend our heartfelt thanks to Mrs Horrocks for her invaluable contributions as a governor, TA, and Forest School Lead over the last few years. With the support of our wonderful parent community, she has created a lasting legacy, enriching our children’s outdoor learning experiences, with a wonderful outdoor classroom to serve generations to come.

Meet the Governors and SLT

We will be holding another SLT Drop in session on 11th March. Don't forget to sign up to meet with the team for a 10 minute chat which is from 3.30 to 4.30pm.

Please make an appointment with the office.  Our next Meet the governors and SLT session will take place after Sports Day on 11th June. We hope to see you there.

School Communities & Family Help - Lottie Brocklesby

A big thank you to all the parents and carers who took the time to drop in and see Lottie! She truly enjoyed connecting with you. We are excited to announce that Lottie will be visiting Pollington-Balne on Monday, 16th March at 2:30 pm, and she would love to meet even more of you there.

If you can’t make it to Pollington-Balne, don’t worry! Lottie will also be dropping in at Cowick on Monday, 23rd March, again at 2:30 pm. Both of these drop-in sessions coincide with our Book Fairs, so it’s a perfect opportunity to pick up a lovely book for your child while you’re visiting.

Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to seeing you soon!

Oak Class

Oak class have loved reading the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We know that traditional stories are shared over many years and can change so there are lots of different versions. We know that they start with Once upon a time. We have enjoyed retelling the story both in the home corner and with puppets. Our year One children have adapted the story to then write their own by changing the main character. We are very proud of our writing and are looking forward to making our porridge this week.

Thank you for your support.

Maple Class

This half term, Maple Class have been diving into our new writing unit on adventure stories, focusing on portal tales. We have created actions to help retell Elf Road and then innovated them to create our own portal story with an Ancient Egypt theme,  linking to our geography learning. Throughout the unit, Maple Class have developed their use of expanded noun phrases, compound words and fronted adverbials using some excellent vocabulary! Can your child show you the actions and retell their story?

Miss Yates and Mrs Firth

Ash Class

Ash Class have been busy this half term developing their Art skills and have really enjoyed drawing through close observation of real-life objects. They have explored how to use shapes, tone and shade to add detail and depth to their work. The focus and creativity has been amazing , it has been lovely to see their confidence build and the pride they have shown in completing their final pieces.

Mrs Stone and Mrs Poskitt

Willow Class

Willow Class have thoroughly enjoyed our weekly ERIC sessions (Everybody Reading in Class), embracing the opportunity to read quietly and independently in a calm, relaxed environment. The children love choosing a comfortable spot to read—whether curled up under a table, tucked in with a blanket, or settled on the floor—and this has helped to make reading feel special and enjoyable. Sharing books with friends and talking excitedly about stories has further strengthened their love of reading, creating a positive and inclusive reading culture within the classroom.

Thank you to everyone who has downloaded the parent app and started engaging with Arbor.

Hopefully, we have dealt with any queries effectively and efficiently, thank you for your patience, as there have been a few teathing issues.  We hope that you are finding the booking and payment elements easy to use, it is definitely improving our school systems.  The parent evening booking system I hope you will agree has been an improvement to the manual system.

If anyone does have any issues or want's to amend pupil details on the Arbor system, you can do this by request on they system or drop the office an email.  If you have not yet engaged with the system, please contact the office and we can send you the access email instructions again.

Sports

Sports has got off to a great start this year and everyone that has already taken part has been amazing.

Well done to our year 3/4 pupils who took part in a football friendly this week showing fantastic teamwork and determination throughout every match. The children worked brilliantly together — passing, defending and encouraging one another from start to finish

Jak led an Olympic themed PE day this week across the whole school and everyone had a fabulous time.  The winning team was Green - Italy.

A big thank you to Alfie from Goole Tennis Club for taking the time to teach the children some new skills in years Reception, 1, 2 and 3.

A big thank you goes out to Miss Willden from The Snaith School, who came and taught yr 5 Pickleball!  This was a new game to us, similar to tennis. The year 5's had a great time learning all about the rules and fun of Pickleball.

"I had the pleasure this week of delivering a Pickleball session with a fantastic group of Pollington pupils. From the very start, the children were incredibly enthusiastic and brought such a positive attitude to every activity. They threw themselves into a range of fun mini-games designed to build their skills, teamwork and confidence, and it was wonderful to see how quickly they picked up the techniques and supported one another throughout the session.

I thoroughly enjoyed working with the pupils and was made to feel extremely welcome by both the children and staff. I’m already looking forward to returning after half term to introduce Kinball to another group of pupils and continuing the fun with more active learning experiences!

Have a great half term.

Claire Willden"

Birch Class

In Birch Class, Year 6 have been deepening their knowledge and understanding of what light is through practical investigations. We have formalised our methods by thinking about dependent, independent and controlled variables. We have also thought about how to conduct our experiments with light safely.

In music, we have been learning about Scottish lullabies and were super surprised to learn that lullabies were sung as far back as 4000 years ago and made links between the cuneiform writing of the Ancient Babylonians and the Ancient Sumar which some children in the class learned about last year.

In writing, we have been focussing on setting descriptions, moving on to character descriptions and revisiting dialogue to move the action forward over the next couple of weeks. We have been using age-appropriate picture books as our stimulus.

British Science Week

British Science Week is 6th to the 15th March.   The theme for British Science Week 2026, ‘Curiosity: what’s your question?’, is all about encouraging people to embrace their passions, find the answers to their most burning STEM questions.

To raise the profile of science with our school during British science week we would love your help.  Do you work in a profession/industry which uses science?  Are you passionate about science, would you like to share your enthusiasm with our children?

If you are unable to come in person, it could take the form of a presentation or photographs that the teachers could share on your behalf.

Anyone interested please contact Mrs Batty via the school office.

Parent feedback

Over the last term we have gathered feedback from parents at various events such as parents evenings, meet and greets and questionnaires.

You told us you had concerns about alleged bullying and negative behaviour. We have listened and we have acted:

We held a dedicated training day to review our procedures and strengthen our practice. Staff completed additional training in safeguarding, behaviour policy, autism awareness and SEND to ensure we are meeting the needs of all pupils effectively and consistently.

At our request, a Local Authority safeguarding review took place in January to provide additional external scrutiny and reassurance. The review was comprehensive and highly positive, confirming that strong and effective safeguarding practice is embedded across the school. It recognised the robust systems already in place, the culture of vigilance among staff and governors and our clear commitment to keeping children safe. The review also offered constructive recommendations to help us strengthen our practice even further, which we have fully embraced within our ongoing improvement planning.

We continue to engage closely with the Behaviour Support Team and educational psychology service, and have spoken directly with children to ensure their voices are heard and reflected in our approach.

Working alongside our School Improvement Advisor, we have reviewed inclusion strategies, classroom adaptations and positive behaviour approaches to ensure high expectations are matched with appropriate support. We also continue to work closely with the Education Welfare Service and other external partners to provide joined-up support for pupils and families.

Excitingly, we are now looking to implement layers on top of our already successful dojo point system to align with our behaviour policy and most importantly encourage our children to display positive behaviours for learning in school consistently through extra rewards!

Thank you for sharing your concerns, your feedback is important to us as it helps us to reflect, improve and strengthen our school for every child.

Thank you Matilda!

Pollington-Balne School and PTA would like to say a HUGE well done to Matilda Scruton for running the pop up Christmas Coffee and Craft stall at Balne Lodge Christmas Trees back in December.

Matilda raised a whopping £137 for the school in her own time over a few cold weekends in December. Some of her school friends and cousins came to play and help to show their support too!

These small gestures of charity really matter and help to top up funding to pay for fun things like trips to the Pantomime at Christmas creating valuable memories for the children.

Letters of Thanks

To all at Pollington School.

Local Art Class

I currently teacher art classes that take place at the Balne Parish Hall. A new timetable for these sessions is scheduled to begin on March 1st, and I would love to share this information with your school community. We have some of your students attend but it would be lovely to reach out to some of your families that may not be on social media.

Reminders

Parking

We kindly remind all parents and visitors to park safely and considerately while on school premises. Please refrain from parking on yellow lines, as this can obstruct traffic and create safety hazards.

One of the observations from the Local Authority safeguarding team was: 'Parents were observed parking with engines running and parking alongside each other for extended periods while talking, which increases congestion and reduces visibility'. Please support us in keeping our children and families safe. If you are using the visitor car park, we ask that you vacate your space promptly after dropping off your child, allowing others the opportunity to use the facility. Where possible, we encourage families to walk or adopt a ‘park and stride’ approach to reduce congestion and promote a healthier environment for our students.

Safeguarding our children

We would like to remind parents and carers that if you arrive after the gate has been closed, it is essential to bring your child into school through the main office. Please be aware that there are no teaching staff on duty after this time, and the doors to the school are locked for security reasons.

Additionally, the pre-school has requested that parents, carers, and grandparents refrain from holding the gate open for others. This measure is in place to safeguard all our children and to ensure we are aware of who is on site at all times.

Medicines

We have had an increase in the administering of medicines in school.  Can we therefore, remind parents that medicines should be worked around school times if less than 4 doses per day.  We can only administer medicine prescribed by your gp.

Holidays

Can we remind everyone that a holiday form should be submitted prior to your planned holidays.

Thank you for your cooperation in these matters.
